What are implants?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium, used to replace a missing tooth. A dentist places an implant in the jawbone, where titanium is combined with the bone. Just as the previously present tooth root, such an implant creates a stable basis for the crown, which is a visible part of the new tooth.
Dental implants are very small; they are usually ca. 10-milimeter long and only 3-5 millimetre-wide at the top.
It is commonly believed that dental implants are the most effective currently used method of missing tooth reconstruction, as they provide numerous benefits to patients.
- Natural smile
A dental implant looks like a real tooth. All tooth characteristics can be adjusted: its colour, shape, and contour. As a result, you get a natural smile which will give you more self-confidence and improve the quality of your life. With new, shiny teeth visible on the outside, you will feel better also inside.
- Correct eating and articulation
Have you ever had to give up having your favourite meal because of missing teeth? Do you feel embarrassed while talking to your co-workers and friends because dentures or missing teeth make it impossible to speak clearly? Dental implants will restore all these functions of your real teeth. Regardless of how hard, crunchy, chewy you like your meals, dental implants will restore all products to your menu. They will also allow for clear articulation during the next business presentation or a long conversation with your friends.
- Adjacent teeth intact
In other reconstruction methods, it is often necessary to polish adjacent teeth to mount a reconstructed tooth in the oral cavity. Dental implants have no negative effect on adjoining teeth.
- Stable and well-matched
Because dental implants are adjusted to the jawbone, they are much more comfortable that other teeth reconstruction methods and provide a long-term stability. What is more, implants are made of biocompatible materials, which means that human body will tolerate them better.
- Long-term and effective solution
Dental implants are very durable and long-lasting. Proper care and good hygiene of one’s oral cavity will ensure long life of implants, even to the end of a patient’s life. From the moment the first advanced implants were used in 1965, many years of research on their functionality and stability have passed.
- Cost efficiency
It is believed that implant treatment is a long-term investment in health and wellbeing – therefore, an investment in your life. In comparison with other reconstruction methods, implant costs may initially seem higher. However, higher maintenance costs, a possibility of continuing jawbone recession and, finally, the loss of more teeth may increase long-term costs of other reconstruction methods.
Implantation procedure step by step:
Implants were designed in a way to ensure their immediate functionality. This means that a dentist can place a temporary replacement already on the day of the procedure. As a result, the patient can go back home already with a temporary set of permanent teeth and reduce the number of appointments. However, certain conditions have to be met. Talk to your dentist and find out if this is possible in your case.
