Healthy teeth can fail to meet our expectations, as nature gives us different imperfections, such as uneven 1s or exceedingly large gaps between them. We sometimes contribute to our unattractive look, which stops us from smiling from ear to ear, by drinking a lot of coffee, tea, coloured sodas. Visible discolouration are impossible to remove even when perfectly conforming to the rules of hygiene. If you experience one of such problems, we offer you a perfect solution – veneers.
What are veneers and their advantages?
Veneers are small, thin layers of durable dental materials. They can take any shape and serve as a restoration of your ideal tooth form. After they are stuck to the tooth surface, they cover any fillings, discolouration, and other defects. The possibility to make veneers of any size and shape allows for a change of an individual tooth appearance and its adjustment to the shape, size, and color of the remaining teeth. As a result of such a correction, we get perfectly even teeth of the same color.
Veneers allow for:
- perfect masking of all imperfections: discolouration, uneven surfaces, and fillings which contrast with the tooth surface,
- the change of teeth shape, proportions, and sizes, as well as for fitting them in the whole jaw structure,
- removal of unattractive spaces between teeth,
- the improvement of your smile,
- making your smile look the way you want and dream of.
Sticking veneers to teeth requires only slight interference in the tooth tissue, and you get the effect in a very short time.
Composite or porcelain veneers?
Veneers are made of two types of dental materials which differ in price and durability. Cheaper composite veneers guarantee beautiful look of your teeth and the significant improvement of your smile, though such a procedure is less durable. This solution has one more important advantage – the possibility to quickly fix possible damages. On the other hand, its disadvantages include: susceptibility to chipping, abrasions, and discolouration. If you want to change your look quickly, but you have limited resources at the moment, composite veneers can help you make your dreams come true.
Composite veneers have an extremely durable and long-lasting alternative of porcelain veneers. Even though they are more expensive than composite veneers, once applied, they will stay with you for many years, guaranteeing a beautiful smile in all situations and circumstances. Their big advantage is definitely their high durability and resistance to external factors. That is why they are subject to mechanic damages only occasionally and are not susceptible to discolouration. They are also biocompatible with tissue in the oral cavity and are significantly similar to natural teeth in their physical characteristics and appearance.
When and how are veneers recommended?
Smile correction with veneers is used only in case of front teeth, in the section limited by 3s and 4s. In more anterior regions, we use crowns or other indirect forms which require more intervention in tissues, and, quite often, the tooth needs significant polishing. Veneers are applied only on the front tooth surface, without affecting the chewing surface. The procedure of sticking veneers to teeth only requires that a thin layer of enamel is polished off (its thickness is equivalent to that of the veneer). In some situations, intervention is completely unnecessary, for instance when the procedure aims at thickening or widening a tooth which is too fragile.
Apart from their many advantages, veneers are significantly similar to the natural bone structure, which makes them invisible and ideally integrated with the remaining teeth. It is possible to perfectly match dyeing with the teeth natural colour and texture. With a specially prepared technique of connections, borders between veneers and natural teeth are also invisible. Especially good effects can be achieved with porcelain veneers. Their perfect edge adjustment not only affects the aesthetic aspect, but also eliminates the risk of tooth decay bacteria growing in gaps. Our health can be additionally protected with the use of special cements with antibacterial or bacteriostatic additions to stick the veneers.
Who should avoid veneers?
Both in the case of most dental procedures, which require intervention in the structure of teeth, and in the case of veneers, not everyone can use this option to improve their smile. Contraindications include:
- a very thin layer of enamel,
- an endodontically treated tooth,
- diseases of gums and periodontium,
- bruxism – excessive teeth grinding,
- occlusal parafunctions resulting in wrong habits, such as teeth grinding, strong biting, nail biting, etc.
How are veneers applied in our clinic?
We professionally fabricate composite or porcelain veneers in our office in Warsaw district of Ochota, where we treat our patients. The whole process of veneers application by our dentist requires from 2 to 4 visits. Procedure time and price depend on such factors as the number of applied veneers, their type, fabrication method, and whether the products were ready to use or tailor-made.
It is necessary to conduct an examination, determine your expectations regarding the final effect, and specify possible contraindications. if your teeth require treatment or whitening, execution time will extend by the time of visits necessary to perform additional procedures. If your teeth are healthy, during the first visit, our dentist makes your teeth impressions and performs a simulation of the new look, including the colour and shape of veneers. After you accept the project, a so-called new smile mock-up is created.
A so-called new teeth “fitting” – applying a veneers mock-up without polishing. Using it for several days, you can determine if it is comfortable and how satisfied you are with your new look. If there are any remarks, your doctor will make improvements during the next visit.
It takes place after you accept mock-up veneers. During this appointment, a dentist gently polishes your natural teeth or tarnishes enamel with local anaesthesia, and then makes impressions of polished teeth. These impressions will be a basis for the actual veneers. Until the moment veneers are applied, temporary veneers are placed on your teeth.
Takes place after 10-15 days. In the office, you will have your temporary veneers removed. The doctor will choose cement colour and stick proper onlays. The cement is cured with a special lamp. The last stage of the procedure is to remove cement excess and polish the surface of tooth and connecting points.
Veneers are applied to last many years, but more than ten hours after the procedure, they are still sensitive to external factors. During this time, it is recommended to avoid colouring beverages, such as coffee, tea, or fruit juices, as well as eating solid food.
The maintenance of veneers does not differ from the way you should care for your permanent teeth. It is recommended to brush them twice a day with a fluoride paste and a soft brush, as well as to wash teeth with antibacterial mouthwash and use dental floss. You will achieve better results also by regularly removing calculus and checking up your teeth at the dentist’s.
